Work has begun to clear the seabed for the second electricity interconnector between Malta and Sicily. This phase involves engineers sweeping the sea floor to remove any unexploded ordnance or other buried obstacles.

The clearance follows a detailed marine survey that identified almost 400 potential targets requiring investigation along the 99-kilometre route of the submarine cable. This step is crucial to ensure the safe laying of the new interconnector.
