## In brief

- Malta has the largest difference in pension income between men and women in the European Union.
- The gender pension gap in Malta stands at 40.3%.
- This means women in Malta receive significantly less pension income than men.

A recent report has shown that Malta has the widest gender pension gap across all European Union member states. This means there is the largest difference in pension income received by men and women in the country.

The report indicates that Malta's gender pension gap is 40.3%. This figure highlights that women in Malta receive considerably less pension income compared to men.

The gender pension gap is calculated by comparing the average gross pension income of women to that of men. A higher percentage indicates a larger disparity between the two genders.

This significant gap can be influenced by various factors, including differences in career paths, working hours, pay, and breaks taken for family responsibilities, which can affect women's contributions to pension schemes over their working lives.
