# Malta's Corradino Prison Ranked Among Europe's Most Overcrowded

## In brief

- A new Council of Europe report has identified Corradino Correctional Facility as one of Europe's most overcrowded prisons.
- The prison's population density surged from 83 inmates per 100 available places in 2024 to 118 inmates per 100 places.
- More than a third of the inmates at Corradino are currently awaiting sentencing.

A recent report by the Council of Europe has found that Malta's Corradino Correctional Facility is now among the most overcrowded prisons across the continent. The findings highlight a significant increase in the prison population within a short period.

According to the report, the inmate population at Corradino surged from 83 inmates per 100 available places in 2024 to 118 inmates per 100 places. This represents a substantial rise in density, pushing the facility beyond its intended capacity.

The report also noted that a considerable portion of the prison's population, specifically more than a third, consists of individuals who are currently awaiting sentencing. This detail provides further insight into the composition of the inmate numbers contributing to the overcrowding.

The Council of Europe's findings are based on an examination of prison populations across various European countries. The data indicates a rapid change in Malta's prison situation, moving from below capacity to a state of significant overcrowding within approximately one year.

Both Lovin Malta and Times of Malta reported on these findings, drawing attention to the implications of the increased pressure on the correctional facility.
