The trial by jury of Yorgen Fenech, who stands accused of complicity in the 2017 murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, began on Wednesday. This marks a significant development, almost seven years after his arrest and nine years since the killing that deeply affected the island's political landscape. Mr Fenech was arrested in 2019 in connection with the murder. The case has been a focal point of public attention and legal proceedings since then. Among the defence team present in court was lawyer Giannella de Marco. The Maltese Herald noted her presence, highlighting her recent involvement in a lawyers' strike. This industrial action was prompted by claims of prison wiretapping, which Ms de Marco had publicly supported. The trial begins six years and eight months after Fenech's arrest, which occurred as he reportedly attempted to flee Malta. This also marks 3,180 days since the investigative journalist was killed in a car bomb attack near her home in Bidnija on 16th October 2017. Lovin Malta and NET News both reported on the start of the trial, with Lovin Malta specifically drawing attention to the years-long wait for the proceedings to begin. ## The Spin Room **Medium media divide.** Lovin Malta and NET News reported on the commencement of the trial, with Lovin Malta highlighting the significant time elapsed since the murder and arrest.
