The Institute of Maltese Journalists has strongly criticised remarks made by Minister Agius Galea regarding murdered journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

In a formal reaction to the comments, the journalists' representative body described the minister as being out of touch, rebuking the public official over the stance taken.

The criticism centres on statements touching upon the legacy and work of Caruana Galizia, whose 2017 assassination remains a central issue in Maltese public life.

The institute emphasised the necessity of responsible public discourse from government officials, particularly when addressing sensitive matters relating to press freedom and the treatment of journalists.

The development comes during a period of renewed national scrutiny over political accountability, institutional integrity, and the state's obligations towards protecting media workers.

The intervention adds to ongoing calls by media and civil society organisations for public figures to show greater sensitivity and respect regarding the assassinated journalist.
