Dead Sperm Whale Removed from Comino Coast
In brief
- A 7.9-metre juvenile sperm whale carcass was removed from the shores of Comino.
- Marine biologists took scientific samples to investigate the cause of death.
- The Environment and Resources Authority confirmed the whale was in a state of decomposition.
Authorities have successfully removed the carcass of a juvenile sperm whale from the coast of Comino. The whale, which measured 7.9 metres in length, was discovered earlier this week.
Before the removal, marine biologists from the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) and other experts took tissue samples. These samples will be used for scientific research and to help determine why the animal died.
The ERA confirmed that the whale was already in an advanced state of decomposition when it was found. The removal operation was coordinated to ensure the area was cleared safely after the necessary data was collected.
