Malta has seen its population increase by 41% since 2004, making it the European Union member state with the second-fastest population growth over the past two decades. This significant rise is largely due to immigration, as reported by Eurostat.
Despite this population growth, Malta continues to have the lowest fertility rate in the EU. For the eighth year in a row, the country's birth rate has remained at the bottom of the bloc's rankings.
New data from Eurostat shows that Malta's fertility rate dropped to 1.01 births per woman in 2024. This is a further decrease from the 1.06 births per woman recorded in 2023.
