Manoel Island Padel Courts Draw Criticism from PN and NGOs

The Planning Authority's recent approval for padel courts on Manoel Island has sparked significant controversy, drawing criticism from political parties and environmental non-governmental organisations.

The Nationalist Party (PN) stated that the approval breaks a promise to establish a national park on the island. They highlighted concerns that the development goes against the public interest.

Environmental groups have also voiced strong opposition. Żminijietna urged the government to block the permit, arguing that the decision undermines the vision for Manoel Island as a public space. Din l-Art Ħelwa echoed these sentiments, stating that the island is being handed back to private interests through such developments.

Graffitti has been particularly vocal, calling for a protest to challenge the decision. They criticised the project, asserting that it prioritises private gain over public access and environmental protection.

In response to the criticism, Gżira United has defended the project, stating their position on the matter. The controversy continues to unfold as various stakeholders express their views on the future of Manoel Island.

The left-wing think tank Żminijietna – Voice of the Left has called on the government to use every lawful mechanism at its disposal to block the development of padel courts on Manoel Island. The organisation warned that granting planning permission before any public consultation has begun 'undermines commitments' made regarding the island's future.

Żminijietna emphasised that public consultation is crucial for such developments and that the current process lacks sufficient public input.
