In the ongoing Yorgen Fenech murder trial, former Police Commissioner Lawrence Cutajar took the stand today, facing serious accusations during his testimony.
Mr Cutajar, who previously served as Police Commissioner, was accused of lying under oath and corruption by the defence lawyer during cross-examination. The accusations arose in connection with his testimony in separate proceedings related to the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder case.
According to reports, a wiretapped phone call was presented which allegedly contradicted Mr Cutajar's earlier claim that he had not discussed the murder case with anyone before giving his testimony. This formed a central part of the defence's line of questioning.
The defence lawyer, Giannella De Marco, directly told Mr Cutajar, "You're corrupt," during the intense cross-examination. She also probed him about an alleged tip-off concerning the arrest date of Melvin Theuma, the pardoned middleman in the murder case.
In response to questions, Mr Cutajar stated that he had not provided any such tip-off. He also affirmed his willingness to answer every question put to him during his time on the witness stand.
Mr Cutajar confirmed his role as Police Commissioner at the time of the events being discussed in court. His testimony marks a significant development in the high-profile murder trial.
