Repubblika Rebuffs Abela Over Claims State Institutions Worked Properly

Rule-of-law organisation Repubblika has publicly rebuked Prime Minister Robert Abela after he cited its comments to argue that Malta's justice system and state institutions operated properly.

The dispute follows remarks by the Prime Minister in which he defended the handling of the case and the performance of national authorities, pointing to civil society statements accepting the jury verdict as evidence of institutional health.

In response, the non-governmental group clarified that formal respect for the outcome of a court proceeding does not amount to an endorsement of the conduct of state entities.

Repubblika emphasised that honouring a verdict delivered by a jury is a fundamental democratic obligation. However, it argued that such deference must not be exploited to gloss over systemic shortcomings or shield public bodies from scrutiny.

The organisation reiterated that acknowledging the final legal decision should never be conflated with affirming that institutions fulfilled their duties adequately throughout the process.

The exchange reflects ongoing friction between civil society organisations and the administration regarding governance, judicial accountability, and the broader institutional lessons arising from the trial.
