Malta marked the 62nd anniversary of its Independence on Monday with official state ceremonies held across Valletta and Floriana. Following earlier concerns raised during the religious service, national dignitaries gathered to commemorate the historic transfer of sovereignty.
The national programme commenced with a Pontifical Mass celebrated at St John's Co-Cathedral in the capital. The service brought together political figures, state officials, and members of the public to mark the annual milestone.
President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono led the day's proceedings, representing the state during the principal ceremonial functions. Senior cabinet members also attended, including Lands and Affordable Accommodation Minister Owen Bonnici.
Following the cathedral service, a formal military parade was conducted through the streets of Valletta. Members of the Armed Forces of Malta marched in ceremonial formation before taking up positions for the national salute.
The commemorations then moved to Floriana for the traditional floral tribute. Dignitaries laid wreaths at the foot of the Independence Monument, honouring the figures involved in Malta's attainment of self-determination in 1964.
The annual commemorations conclude a series of national events held to celebrate the anniversary of Malta becoming an independent state within the Commonwealth.
