Speaker of the House of Representatives Anġlu Farrugia has affirmed that the family of assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, working journalists, and Maltese society as a whole deserve full justice.

Delivering remarks on the essential function of the media in a democratic society, Farrugia emphasised that investigative reporting remains crucial for public accountability. He stated that journalists must be empowered to scrutinise public figures, raise challenging questions, and investigate matters of public importance without fear of retribution, hostility, or intimidation.

The Speaker highlighted the ongoing institutional duty facing the country following the October 2017 assassination of Caruana Galizia. He underscored that securing full judicial accountability for the crime remains vital to rebuilding public confidence in national democratic processes.

Farrugia observed that a free and independent press serves as a vital pillar of good governance alongside the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. He warned that whenever reporters face barriers or threats, the public's right to remain informed is fundamentally undermined.

The address coincides with broader domestic and European evaluations regarding statutory protections, safety measures, and legal safeguards available to working journalists.

Farrugia concluded by reiterating that protecting freedom of expression and providing an enabling environment for investigative reporters is an enduring democratic obligation for the Maltese state.
