Triq Il-Marfa in Mellieħa Reopens Following Emergency Wall Repairs

In brief

  • Triq il-Marfa in Mellieħa is scheduled to reopen to traffic following emergency reconstruction works.
  • A three-storey retaining wall had collapsed onto the carriageway during severe weather earlier this month.
  • The road functions as a primary traffic link connecting the town of Mellieħa to Għadira Bay.

Triq il-Marfa in Mellieħa is reopening to vehicular traffic following emergency repair works carried out over recent weeks. The vital northern arterial link had faced severe disruption after a major structural failure.

The road closure occurred earlier in September when a wall measuring roughly three storeys collapsed during a bout of heavy storm weather. Debris and masonry spilled directly across the carriageway, prompting authorities to close off the route immediately on safety grounds.

The thoroughfare serves as a critical transport corridor in the northern district of Malta, providing a direct vehicular link between Mellieħa and Għadira Bay. It also accommodates substantial commuter and commercial traffic travelling towards the ferry terminal at Ċirkewwa.

Following the collapse, emergency infrastructure crews were deployed to clear the fallen rubble, secure the adjacent cliff face, and rebuild the damaged boundary structure. The works aimed to stabilise the perimeter thoroughly to prevent further soil and stone displacement during future rainfall.

Officials confirmed that the necessary structural safety interventions have been completed, allowing the route to reopen ahead of regular commuter flows. Motorists travelling through the area had previously been directed onto alternative diversions across neighbouring bypasses.

Normal traffic flow along the stretch is expected to resume immediately as regular access is restored in both directions.
