Enemalta Issues Tender for New Submarine Cables to Connect Malta and Gozo

In brief

  • State energy provider Enemalta has started procurement for two new submarine electricity cables.
  • The project aims to improve the subsea power connection linking mainland Malta with Gozo.
  • The call for tenders comes in the wake of extensive electricity outages experienced over the summer.

Enemalta has formally initiated a tendering procedure to procure two replacement submarine electricity cables to reinforce the connection between Malta and Gozo.

The project is designed to enhance the stability of Gozo's energy supply by adding modern subsea distribution lines across the channel.

This move to upgrade the inter-island infrastructure follows a difficult summer characterised by repeated power cuts across several localities.

Under the planned works, the procurement covers the supply and laying of the new undersea cables, ensuring backup capacity in the event of local distribution failures.

Gozo depends heavily on subsea links originating from the main island, meaning damage or overload on existing lines can leave large areas without electricity.

Enemalta will evaluate the submitted tenders before awarding the contract and commencing the physical installation of the cables.
