A 32-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being charged in court with assaulting and injuring three police officers during a confrontation in Valletta.

James Manfrè, who resides in Msida, appeared before the magistrates' court following an incident that took place in the capital on 30 September.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to 16 separate charges, including assaulting police officers, causing bodily harm, resisting arrest, and breaching the public peace.

The court heard that the altercation escalated when officers intervened, resulting in physical injuries to the three members of the force who were on duty.

Following his arrest, Manfrè had to be transferred to hospital, where medical staff administered sedation due to his agitated state.

During police interrogations, the accused told investigators that he could recall very little of what had transpired during the altercation.

The magistrate presiding over the arraignment turned down a request for bail, ordering that the defendant be detained at the Corradino Correctional Facility pending trial.
