A police investigation has commenced after mobile phones were discovered inside prison cells at the Corradino Correctional Facility in Paola.

The illicit devices were uncovered during targeted security searches carried out across the compound, prompting immediate inquiries into how the contraband entered the facility.

George Degiorgio and Robert Agius are among the prisoners being investigated in connection with the discovery. Reports indicate that at least three inmates have been linked to the prohibited communication equipment.

Degiorgio, known by the moniker "Iċ-Ċiniż", is currently serving a 40-year prison sentence following his conviction for the 2017 murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Agius, known as "Tal-Maksar", is also detained at the facility facing proceedings related to serious organised crime, including charges connected to the procurement of the explosive device used in the same assassination.

Possession of mobile devices inside the correctional facility is strictly prohibited under institutional regulations. Investigators and prison authorities are questioning suspects to determine how the phones breached security and whether staff or visitors assisted.
