The 47th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race officially got under way on Saturday morning, with competitors setting sail from Valletta's Grand Harbour.

More than 100 yachts crossed the start line to embark on the gruelling 606-nautical-mile offshore challenge, which circles Sicily before returning to Maltese waters.

The annual contest is co-organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club and title sponsor Rolex, standing as one of the most prominent fixtures on the international sailing calendar.

Sailing crews from across the globe take part in the event, facing diverse Mediterranean conditions throughout the multi-day offshore circumnavigation.

The race takes the fleet through demanding tactical waters around Sicily, testing both navigation strategy and crew endurance over several days at sea.

Spectators gathered along the historic fortifications surrounding the harbour to watch the fleet depart in consecutive start waves.
