More than 16,000 vehicles were inspected by police officers across Malta and Gozo during an intensive series of roadside operations throughout the summer months.

Data published by the Malta Police Force shows that officers mounted around 720 separate road checks between June and September 2026. The inspections were conducted across various arterial roads and urban locations on both islands.

The sustained nationwide campaign formed part of broader efforts to boost road safety and maintain a visible policing presence during the busy summer period.

As a result of the roadside stops, officers issued roughly 880 contraventions and summonses for a wide range of motoring offences. These infringements typically relate to documentation faults, vehicle defects, and minor regulatory breaches.

In addition to the administrative notices, police filed 104 formal criminal charges against drivers for more serious offences discovered during the inspections.

The police force confirmed that targeted roadside inspections will continue across key routes in the coming months to deter dangerous driving and enforce road regulations.
