Pedestrian crossings on the Gozo Channel ferry service will become free of charge from 1 January 2027, the government has announced.

Prime Minister Robert Abela unveiled the initiative during his parliamentary speech responding to Budget 2027 on Wednesday evening.

The fare exemption will be available to Maltese citizens, European Union nationals, and individuals holding long-term residency status in the country.

The move aims to reduce travel costs between Malta and Gozo, offering financial relief to regular commuters and occasional visitors while promoting foot passenger travel across the channel.

The Gozo Channel service operates regular daily crossings between Mġarr harbour in Gozo and Ċirkewwa in northern Malta, serving thousands of workers, students, and tourists each day.

Further operational details, including how eligible travellers will verify their status at terminal gates, are expected to be published ahead of the scheme's rollout at the start of 2027.
