A Maltese minor who spent three months in the care of Italian social services following an offshore cash seizure has returned to Malta.

The youth was placed under protective custody in Sicily after Italian authorities intercepted roughly €700,000 in floating cash in the waters off the Sicilian coast.

Following the maritime operation, Italian law enforcement stepped in and transferred the minor into the custody of regional social welfare authorities, where he was looked after for three months.

The unusual circumstances surrounding the recovery of hundreds of thousands of euros at sea had drawn significant public and media attention in both Malta and Italy.

Cross-border coordination between the relevant authorities enabled the minor's repatriation, bringing to a close his extended stay under Italian administrative care.

While the youth has now safely arrived back on Maltese soil, inquiries into the origins and intended destination of the seized funds remain ongoing.
