General Election Campaign: Parties and Entities Present Proposals

As the general election campaign progresses, various political parties and entities are actively presenting their proposals to the public. This comes amidst observations regarding the overall nature of the campaign, particularly concerning the availability of full electoral manifestos and public debates.

ADPD – The Green Party has unveiled its animal welfare proposals, which include a total moratorium on new zoo licences and a firm rejection of future amnesties for illegally kept exotic animals. Earlier, Fil-Qosor reported on the Nationalist Party's proposals for mortgage interest aid and direct home buyer subsidies.

Momentum also launched its electoral programme, titled "For a Just and Beautiful Malta," a comprehensive 259-measure framework aimed at a "systemic redesign" of the country's functions.

On the government's side, Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced a new package of proposals for the voluntary sector, specifically targeting band clubs and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). These proposals promise easier permit processes and increased aid for these groups. This follows earlier pledges by the Labour Party on women's health and online safety.

The Nationalist Party has also put forward a six-point plan addressing population and immigration. Key elements of this plan include splitting Identità into two separate one-stop shops, establishing a new authority to forecast population levels, and creating a visible joint security task force to focus on foreign criminals. However, The Maltese Herald has commented on the broader campaign landscape, noting that only ADPD has published its full electoral manifesto so far. The outlet also highlighted the absence of public debates between party leaders and suggested that most political discussions are being conducted by the Labour Party's own propagandists.

Partit Momentum has unveiled a specific proposal as part of its 269-point manifesto, suggesting a flat €2 cab rate for youths and the elderly in Malta. This measure aims to make transport more accessible for these demographic groups.

The party's manifesto, released ahead of the General Election, also includes a broader commitment to invest €234 million annually in public transport systems. Other proposals in the manifesto range from anti-corruption reforms to restrictions on children’s social media access.
