The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IĠM) has condemned threats directed at a newsroom editor following the publication of a routine court report.
According to the institute, a relative of an individual mentioned in the report contacted the editor demanding that the article be immediately removed from the news website.
When the editor refused to take down the piece, the individual allegedly escalated the confrontation by threatening to track down the editor's private residential address.
The IĠM firmly denounced the intimidation attempt, making it clear that such behaviour towards media professionals is entirely unacceptable.
The organisation stressed that reporting on open court proceedings is an essential public function, and newsrooms must be permitted to work without fear of personal harassment.
The incident has renewed focus on the safety of journalists in Malta and the ongoing need to safeguard editorial independence from external pressure.
