Following the tragic death of Miriam Azzopardi in Marsa, a 34-year-old man has been formally charged in court with her femicide.

Isaac Asare, a Ghanaian national, appeared before Magistrate Astrid May Grima on Friday. During the arraignment, he registered a formal plea of not guilty to the charges brought against him.

The court appearance comes two days after Azzopardi was found dead in a field in Marsa on Wednesday morning. The mother of three was discovered lying beneath trees, leading a passer-by to alert police officers on patrol in the area.

Investigators launched a murder probe shortly after the discovery. Initial medical findings indicated that the victim had been strangled before her body was left at the scene.

During Friday's proceedings, Asare confirmed his personal details to the court before the formal charges were read out. The prosecution filed charges under Maltese legal provisions relating to femicide.

The case will now move to the compilation of evidence stage, where the magistrate will hear testimony from investigating officers and review forensic evidence collected during the inquiry.
