A coalition of 11 youth and student organisations has demanded the immediate resignation or dismissal of Planning Authority chief executive Johann Buttigieg.

Convened by Front Żgħażagħ għall-Ambjent (Youth Front for the Environment), the organisations submitted a joint letter to Prime Minister Robert Abela, urging him to take decisive action regarding the leadership of the planning regulator.

The demand follows the recent publication of communications between the planning chief and businessman Yorgen Fenech.

The organisations stated that the revelations have severely compromised public confidence in the integrity and independence of the Planning Authority.

In their joint representation, the youth groups maintained that the nature of the disclosed exchanges makes Buttigieg's continued presence at the helm of the authority untenable.

The coalition stressed that government intervention is necessary to re-establish accountability and restore faith in national planning institutions.
