Eleven NGOs Urge Prime Minister to Dismiss Planning Authority Chief

In brief

  • A coalition of eleven environmental and resident groups has written to Prime Minister Robert Abela demanding the immediate dismissal of Planning Authority chief executive Johann Buttigieg.
  • The organisations called for a comprehensive and independent investigation into his conduct while in public office.
  • Campaigners warned that they are prepared to launch public protests if the government fails to intervene.

A coalition of eleven environmental and resident organisations has formally demanded that Prime Minister Robert Abela remove Johann Buttigieg from his position as chief executive of the Planning Authority.

In a joint letter addressed directly to the Prime Minister, the groups insisted on Buttigieg's immediate dismissal. They also called for a thorough and independent investigation into his professional conduct during his time leading public entities.

The signatories include several prominent activist groups, such as Moviment Graffitti, alongside local organisations representing residents across Malta. They argued that public confidence in the planning process has been severely compromised and requires decisive administrative intervention.

The coalition cautioned that inaction from the government would not go unanswered. The organisations warned that they are prepared to coordinate public mobilisation and grassroots protests across the country if their demands for institutional integrity are disregarded.

The demands follow mounting public scrutiny surrounding governance standards within national planning bodies. Activists have repeatedly raised concerns regarding conflicts of interest and regulatory decisions that favour commercial development over community welfare.

Neither the Office of the Prime Minister nor the Planning Authority has issued a formal public response to the letter.
